Winter Favourite: Mulled Tea

Mulled tea is a comforting, spiced beverage perfect for chilly weather. It’s made by infusing tea with aromatic spices like cinnamon, cloves, and star anise, along with citrus and sometimes a touch of sweetener or alcohol.

The result is a warm, flavorful drink that not only warms you from the inside out but also fills the air with a delightful fragrance. Whether enjoyed on a quiet afternoon or served at a gathering, mulled tea brings cozy vibes to any winter day.

Follow the recipe below to make your own mulled tea:

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups water
  • 4 Old Harbor English Breakfast tea bags
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2-3 whole cloves
  • 2-3 star anise (optional)
  • 2-3 slices of fresh ginger
  • 1 orange (zest and juice)
  • 1-2 tablespoons honey or sugar (optional, adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1/4 cup brandy or rum (optional, for a boozy version)
  •

    Instructions:

    1. Boil the Water: In a medium saucepan, bring 4 cups of water to a boil.

    2. Add Spices and Fruit: Once the water is boiling, add the cinnamon stick, whole cloves, star anise (if using), fresh ginger slices, and orange zest. Reduce the heat to a simmer and let it simmer for about 5-10 minutes. The spices and ginger will infuse the water with flavour.

    3. Brew the Tea: After simmering, add the Old Harbor English Breakfast tea bags to the pot. Let it steep for 4-5 minutes, depending on how strong you like your tea.

    4. Add Orange Juice & Sweetener: Once the tea is brewed, remove the tea bags. Add the freshly squeezed juice of the orange, and sweeten with honey or sugar to taste.

    5. Optional Alcohol: If you're making a boozy version, add brandy or rum to the tea and stir.

    6. Serve: Pour the mulled tea into mugs, garnishing each with a slice of orange or a cinnamon stick, if desired.

    Tips:

    • You can adjust the sweetness and spice level to your liking, adding more ginger, cloves, or cinnamon if you prefer a stronger flavour.
    • This recipe can be made in larger quantities and kept warm in a slow cooker for parties or gatherings.
